Pineapple sage (Salvia elegans) is a half-hardy perennial, usually grown as an annual in cool or cold climates. May grow to 1.5 metres or more in warm climates, smaller in cool or cold climates. In my subtropical part of the world, it's a thug in the garden, gets absolutely huge, (large root system which spreads far and wide), and it flowers in late summer and autumn. It is not a deciduous plant, but any plant will lose its leaves when under stress.

It has to be in a constantly warm climate to survive a winter outdoors. I have had it survive in the ground in a protected location over one warmish winter here in Central California, zone 9. It's easiest to make late cuttings, allow them to root-up over winter, then replant in Spring.

WHy are you bringing in the plant during the Summer? If you meant to say "Winter" then bring it in when it gets below 45º. You might want to cut it back to 6" when you do.... it will sprout new growth. I, personally, haven't had very good luck bringing these plants inside so I just make root-cuttings, like I said earlier.

I am sorry, I did me Winter. I bring the plant in during the Winter, not Summer. Thanks for the info.
