Preserving Basil, before temps drop?

How long can my basil survive outside in zone 8 (georgia) temps are dropping some at night now (60's) by still warm during the day...

this one basil that is fully grown is in a protected area (somewhat)

I'd like to freeze it, but dont want to cut it back too soon...I also dont want to lose it!!

any suggestions?

PS question 2: I started more basil from seed that is now ready to transplant....of course it's not going to last through the winter...but I do have a GH that I'm going to be putting together over the next month or so...and could put it all inside...Will Basil and other herbs do ok inside a GH? again...with the mild winters?

I loved my basil this summer, too, rjinga. My basil reseeded itself this summer and I have little basil plants popping up all over my Zone 6 garden. I chiffonaded some of the tender shoots and froze them in snack-size labeled baggies for use over the winter. I was also thinking of potting some for a sunny windowsill, but I am not sure my windows get enough sun. No GH here, but I don't have anything to lose by trying.

I vote for giving the greenhouse a try - the worst that can happen is that you have to plant new basil in the spring. Freeze some as a back-up.
