Thanks, it does help a bit. This is kind of like the 'what came first scenerio, the chicken or the egg?' Property, design, then builder? Could it be property, builder, then design? I don't know where to start is
my problem. I would so appreciate you telling where does one start?

The typical order is property, design, builder, after you check to make sure your budget is practical. Asking local builders about square footage pricing for custom homes should help you confirm if your budget is in the right ballpark. These numbers will be higher than a non-custom design - for example a design the builder already has available. That should help the builders you speak with differentiate what you are asking for. Any good custom home builder should be able to supply a ballpark range for cost per square foot.

This home is near the MA/RI border, and we have many homes with similar performance either completed, in design, or under construction right now - including one the same area, as well as on the MA north shore, metro Boston area, west of Boston, on Cape Cod, Vermont, New Jersey, Connecticut, and 2-3 other states.

We are building a house also with red cedar on the outside. How was the Red ceder treated? We don't want it to become all grey. We'd like to have a bit of the brown in it.. Any suggestions? thank you!

Hi Sita, Natural stains will maintain the color for some time, but eventually the siding will silver if exposed to sun and weather. It's really just a matter of stalling the process. The cedar clapboards in the picture are starting to turn after 6-12 months and have not been treated.

To me, this home is impeccable. Nice subtle details, and a good example of form follows function. Very beautiful, simple design. I am in love.

Perfection! Do you know if this type of house would work in a canyon?

Each site and owner is unique, which is why each of our designs are unique. This house was designed for a) strong southern exposure and b) a north facing view in c) a cold northern climate with d) a family that had specific layout & amenity desires. It's likely that your site, climate, orientation, and desires are all a bit different, but that's why design custom homes - they fit each client like a glove!
