2008 intros?

When do the hybridizers usually put up their 2008 intros? Obviously Frank Smith has just done so but I guess I just am being impatient to see others.

Michael Miller has his updated now. Just put it up last week. If you order, tell him Carla sent ya his way. He has over 30 intros for 08. He's also taking orders now for spring.

I went and looked. Just confirmed my own belief that no one, and that includes the best, will have 30 unique daylilies to introduce in any one year. Culling is required.

I enjoyed Michael Miller's intros, and although I did see quite a few that are very similar to some I've already seen elsewhere, I think he has some real winners too. Oooh, I'm tempted by his 'Small World Yeah Right'!

Hi Beachlily. Pat Stamile introduced 45 daylilies in 2007. He just did it in two sets: Spring and Fall. Ted Petit introduced 30 and Frank Smith introduced 26.

Edward, it is a money thing. In my own view, introductions should advance daylilies. What makes you think that Michael Miller won't intro another 15-30 this fall? Its more money. If they have intros that look like cultivars that were introduced two years ago and someone pays them for the new ones, who loses? The customer. Distinctive rules and when new disctinctive cultivars are introduced, I will pay. And I do. I was involved this year with the Region 12 Pop Poll. We looked at multiple websites to select a new cultivar for a drawing we would have for people who voted in the popularity poll. We finally found what we thought was distinctive, with great branching and budcount, but it took a lot of effort. The person I was working with and I looked at 5 websites and intros from spring through the fall. Distinctive is difficult to find, but it is worth the effort.

I purchased Spacecoast Seashells this spring. Thought I was getting a distinctive plant. When it bloomed, I looked at it and said is that all it is? The answer, is yes, it isn't anything more. Nice plant, not distinctive. I don't know what I'll do with it.

Distinction is in the eye of the beholder. What I think is distict and appealing might be blaze` to someone else and vice versa. I don't care how many daylilies someone introduces, it is their choice and their $15 for each registration. It is my choice if I want to spend the money.

beachlily the distinction in SPACECOAST SEASHELLS is the appliqued throat in that color combination. If you don't care for appliqued throats, it is not very distictive for an eyed bloom.

Exactly, Brooke! Distinction is required for AHS awards (for seedlings) but not for registration. People have many different reasons for registering a daylily. It is perfectly fine to register a daylily to honor someone, for instance.

If you go only by photos and websites to judge, you are missing out. Nothing beats seeing daylilies in person. I've been fortunate to visit, for example, the Millers' garden a couple times. Michael's plants are wonderful and he is very selective. He has thousands and thousands of seedlings from which he selects. I would happily grow any of them (I have three right now, I believe, of his introductions) because I know they will thrive.

It isn't just one market...hybridizers (hobbyist or more) are working all over to produce daylilies that grow wonderfully in all the various regions of our country. It is about more than a pretty face...and sometimes, even a distinctive face.

It's great to have choices! There are many reasons for buying a daylily (or daylilies...lol!). It's like anything else...some people want the latest and greatest (of whatever it is) and others are content to wait. It's all fine.

Also, what's wrong with making money?? It takes a lot of work to bring a daylily to the point of selling. I have the big (ha) two years experience now of growing seedlings and it is a lot of effort...and who knows if I'll have anything worthy of registration.

Finally, if you have the opportunity to hear a hybridizer speak, go! You can hear why they selected a particular flower for introduction. Plus, you'll learn a few things (always good!).

P.S. I feel I must say something else. This spring, Michael Miller taught a few of us a scape grooming class. I learned a lot from him. We worked with plants from their gardens...and I just want to say, if you think his plants are like everyone else's...then, I think you haven't seen them. The Millers grow a lot of other hybridizers' plants as well as their own. It is a neat opportunity to see Michael's plants as well as the latest and greatest from others. I say Michael's plants hold their own. And, for me, here in Virginia, his plants are valuable because, as I mentioned, I know they'll grow well here.

    Email me beachlily,

I will happily trade you something more distinctive for the Spc SEA SHELLS.

All the major hybridizers will try to have a variety of plants and I think each one they introduce, they feel is better than their last. I would hope that they don't watch their competition and only introduce flowers that are "distinctive". Let the customer choose the flower for the reasons they think important or pleasing. I prefer variety and I'm very critical when buying, but that's my choice.

You wouldn't expect Ford, or any other auto manufacturer to make only one automobile, would you?

    Lighten up already!

Ed, I wouldn't buy a Ford, not disctinctive enough with one exception. That one's out of my price range.

    I'll think about a trade. I've got 14 fans.

Would like to Thank you all for the good things you have said about my our daylilies. I don't do fall intros. I do it one time a year.

Welcome to the forum Michael. You have some wonderful new intros. I adore your SW Breanna. I have a granddaughter by that name. :) From reading the comments about your gardens, that gonegardening makes, I am sure I would love to see them.

I saw on the Spider Group and The Immage group that Bob Schwarz here on Long Island, NY, has announced his 2008 intros just yesterday. Hopefully more hybridizers will start doing the 2008 intros soon. I like to check them all out!

Well, they started putting up the 2008 intros as per the other posts. Ones I am myself especially waiting for are Melanie Mason and Brian Culver because I have ordered from them for spring and might add to my order. Also Karol Emmerich. I want to order and figgure I will wait for the 2008 intros before I decide which ones to get.
