Never tried them but from your info I think I'd agree that they aren't worth the work if that is all you get from them.

I grew some this year, too, and I agree with denninmi; I like the flavor, but the fruit are small and I'm not going to raise a ton of them next year.

Here are some pictures for the curious. I raised the vine in a large pot:

It put out eight fruit, each the size of a big kiwifruit:

I picked one when it was deep yellow all over:

And here it is, sliced in half for inspection.

As for the taste? Pleasant and interesting, sweet-tart, not bitter at all but tart in a nice lemonade-like way. Nothing like a peach, of course. There's a faint melon smell which is nice. The rind is thin but pretty chewy, and you'll probably want to remove it. Now, I warn you guys--I may have picked that one too soon. I think I'll let the rest stay on the vine until they fall off, or something. If they get a lot sweeter, I'll come back and edit this post.

If these grew wild in my area, and I was the thrifty type, then I'd certainly gather them and put them up for later. But, like denninmi, I can't really see going out of my way to raise them.

The flesh on yours looks a little thicker than mine. Could just be genetics or the growing conditions, yours looks a little more pampered than mine were.

I found some of these sprouted up in my garden here in Houston TX. Much smaller finished product, but that's probably a result of the poor water conditions at the moment!
