I sure wish I had a system last summer. Lots of new trees, shrubs and perennials plus many transplants in spring. Then, the driest summer I can remember. A lot of hose lugging...

Most of these plants can't get too much water or mulch once the temp gets warm. They may not die from the drought, but they do quit growing.

i have one spigot about 200 yds away from my backyard.

When we had our lawn irrigation system put in, we were able to have them run a spigot to the back of our lot, smack in the middle of the back property line. That was PERFECT! My yard is 100' wide and the garden right the width of the back property line and comes forward about 40' on one side and 30 or so on the other side.

From that spigot, I ran PVC all along the back line and strategically placed 4 sprinkler heads at our metal fence posts. Those 4 cover the back of the garden and most of the sides (the remainder is covered by the lawn sprinklers).

Though I'd have preferred drip lines, the squirrels have demonstrated tenacity in drinking from anything they can chew thru, so that option was out.... I started a drip system in a small section of the garden a couple years ago. That lasted about 1 week before they chewed thru.

The last time I had driveway and walkways renewed (asphalt) I buried 4 in white plastic pipes a ft down under the walkways. I am putting my soaker hoses through those.
Otherwise my property is only 1/2 acre, can sprinkle all property via 50 or 75 ft hoses. I also leave a hose and sprinkler permanently connected to the vegetable garden all summer.

I am lucky enough to live on an old farm that had a deep, 300 foot well, and i water as needed all summer long. i swear i am putting in irrigation hoses one day when i grow up.

I forgot to mention that I am on a well with my neighbor,and he wouldn't appreciate me running us both out of water if it got really dry here! I was just stating a fact,and there's no way I am ever going to put in any kind of sprinkler system. Rain still supplies all I need,and even though we have had droughts,I have never lost a hosta due to not enough rain. Phil

I also have limitations in sprinkling - I am on a public water system, and it costs a lot when watering a lot. So I only water perennials and other plantings, rarely the lawn, and only when needed. Bernd
