Sorry you'll miss it stephen they have ruby-throated hummingbird walks every wednesday and saturday and hummingbird migration August 18 25 and 27 That one sounds the most interessting you get to watch hummingbirds migrate south at night. By the way I hope your Dad got out of Mexico beforee Emily strikes. Sarah

Hang in there, Everett! I used to think I'd never see one, and now I get that treat every summer! Sarah, I was just 'down the shore' this weekend, so I probably won't make it to Cape May on the 23rd - phooey! I like to go there each year to see the Monarchs migrating. It's an amazing experience!

The gardens at Cape May Research are really quite special. Anyone going down to the southern Jersey shore should take some time to stop and walk around them, which you can do most any time, so you don't have to pick that particular day.

CMBO and Rancocas Nature Center which is near Philly will be running fieldtrips to private gardens in August. If you go to the New Jersey Audubon web site you'll find a list of the trips with a telephone number for signing up. I think Pat Sutton will be running the Cape May tours. Pat is a good friend, a wonderful adult educator, and a crack naturalist. I'm less sure of who will end up leading the RNC trip, it could be me god forbid. My garden is one of the ones that will be visited in any case. That detail doesn't have me nervous yet, but that might change. Currently some sort of virus is killing most of my rudbeckia hirta, ripping holes in the flowerbeds, and then there is the woodchuck problem effecting the veggie garden. Then again perfect is a state of mind, not a state of nature.

So how were the CMBO gardens? This is the first year they haven't had a part-time gardener, who also happened to be an expert wildlife gardener, tending things. It is a big garden to just be handled by volunteers.

Good morning! We took a ride to the CMBO Saturday and it was great! I bought a Cardinal Flower and some new brushes for my hummer feeders and a heater for the birdbath this winter...the hummingbirds were flitting around the feeders like crazy and the gardens were gorgeous but need some deadheading which I would love to go and do for them but my dh gave me "the" look when I mentioned it!!! They had a scope set up on a hummie nest and that was exciting to see! Have no idea how they spotted it without a telescope when they found it!!! Anyway, we had a great time and it was well worth the drive!

great pictures, sarah, thank you. almost like we got to go, too! the double reflection in the window of the hummer on the saucer feeder is surreal. very cool. it would have been fun if we could have all gone together.
