But 'Halcyon' wins.

Closest runners-up: 'Topaz' and 'Fragrant Blue,' both of which are different than the usual blue color. Stunning when planted near one another! 'FB' almost seems aquamarine to me.

And in the mini-smalls, small 'Kiwi Blue Baby' has been a trouper for me, strong and healthy and a nice color.

How can you forget Blue Mouse Ears....

Halcyon, Queen of the Seas, BME, Blue Baron, Blue Ice, Salute, not necessarily in that order. They all are different shaped/sized plants. This is almost like asking a Mom, which is her favorite kid.

over the years.. the blues vary from plant to plant ... it seems that its is never the same blue.. that is the bluest..

I have to echo what Lisa said in the first post. I think Halcyon edges out Fragrant Blue and Topaz ever so slightly.

Of course, my absolute favorite I lost to crown rot last winter and since it was olne of my seedlings, it isn't available anywhere :-(

Hosta are ever changing , my bluest this season are Deep Blue Seas & Touch of Class. Queen of the Seas , Alligator Shoes,Azure Snow have color , shape & texture that just take a hosta nuts breath away ! I even have folks who never liked hosta before asking for " a nice big chunk of that one" :o .....on these . ~Dot

On walking the garden just now - I have to add Baby Blue Eyes to the list.....

All such beautiful blue hostas. I'm really loving Kiwi Blue Baby (so little and blue) and Queen of the Seas (beautiful color and shape). Variegated is wonderful, I love variegation. The Olive Bailey Langdon is gorgeous! I'm not set on a certain size either. So where would one find such beautiful specimens? Mail order? If so, where do you shop? We have many nurseries around here, but you know they only carry a handful each year and usually the most common. Oh, it is going to be hard to decide!!!

Harmony is really blue here.

Elegans. I love the way it holds its leaves out, like a waiter offering the canape plate. Salute for its invincibility and unique, upright form.

A great underused blue is Brother Ronald an Eric Smith introduction that rates number 1 on the Zilis blue scale. Mine has a great blue gray color with excellent corrigation. Also nice white flowers. None of the pictures on Hostalibrary.org begin to do it justice. Give it a try.

Where does everyone get them? I have a lot of nurseries around me and they all carry a handful or so, but there are so many hosta. Do you order them online? If so, what are the places you buy from?

Oh, I wish I had seen this post a few months ago when ordering. I just planted Blue Umbrellas. It is not on anyones list. Not a good choice?

Blue Umbrellas is a great hosta.
Forms a huge shiny leaf canopy.
Growth rate is decent and upright form is beautiful.
Unfortunately it has a tendency to the Greener spectrum rather than the Blue for me (especially later in the season).
Still a great hosta that forms an excellent specimen plant, I doubt you will be disappointed with it...

Don't buy blues without checking in on Tidewater. It's a gorgeous, waxy blue with great form and pointy, cascading leaves.

Check out Mississippi Delta too. Large, very round leaves with excellent substance.

tishfromwis--I think a lot of us get many hosta through the internet!! However, 'Blue angel', 'Elegans', 'Halcyon', 'Blue Cadet' should be readily available through good local nurseries! I love 'em all!

Alexa--your seedling was GORGEOUS--I know you're grieving over it's loss!!

I wanted a fast growing large sized blue hosta and Blue Regal came up on my web swarch. So i just ordered it. I wanted Halcyon but was told they are slow growers. Does anybody have any experience with Blue Regal?

If Halcyon is planted in a bit of sun, it grows fine. But it's never going to be a large hosta, it's considered a medium. Blue Regal is a nice hosta, good coloration and interesting foliage. Blue Angel will grow reasonably fast, and is very large. But you will want to plan to give it a space that's at least 6 feet by 6 feet, and 8x8 is better.

A few of my favorites that haven't been mentioned are Blue Dimples, Theo's Blue, Flemish Sky, Blue Jay, and Prairie Sky. All hold their color well into the summer, grow very nicely, and look good all season.

I love Prairie Sky.

This is my friend and neighbor's hosta. We don't know the cultivar of it but it is sure gorgeous. Someone suggested maybe it is Ice Age Trails or Galaxy? Whatever it is, I want one! I like how all the leaves are so different and I like the greens, blues and white accents. :)
