What's so bad about sprouting bulbs?

I've been reading various posts saying how people have bought the least sprouted bulbs to plant this spring. Similar comments have said that sprouting bulbs would be planted in pots rather than the ground.

To me, it seems that buying a bulb with a sprout only shows that the bulb is alive.

Why are sprouting bulbs a bad idea?

I am, of course, asking this because I have some bulbs that have sprouted.... some just an inch, others, several inches or even into a plant starting to leaf.

Can someone please enlighten me?

Thanks,

Melissa
