Anyone using a GREY water setup?

I have been meaning to ask if any of you were recycling your sink and or bath water, then using it to water the garden? I have thought of putting some sort of tank in the basement before.. I could divert water to it in the warm season, then pump to the garden..

just wondered...

I haven't. I'm in the city, so I don't have the opportunity at this point. My friend's dad did it in Houston. He used all the bath, sinks and washing machine water to water his lot. She said he had no problems. If you don't get enough information, let me know. I'll see if she can hook you up with her dad. He's an technical kind of guy.

We had to do some of that during our California droughts in the past. (It never rains here in the summertime, and the reservoirs were low, so we were on restrictions. I let my front 900 sq ft of lawn go, but I watered my hostas with that first several gallons that comes out of the shower before it gets hot. Talk about dedication.) There are some things in the grey water that are OK for awhile, but you don't want them to build up.

Is Butch still doing hostas? I thought he left and got political.

Not in a hurry to put one together.. I was more interested if anyone had tried it, and had success. Talk about reusing something ;)

We have such a 'system', though accidentally ;-)

I won't bore y'all with how that happened, but suffice to say that all the plants growing around where the kitchen and laundry room effluent emerge thrive.

Besides, in the dead of winter it keeps the snow melted and several birds use that spot to replenish their craw with fresh sand and gravel, so, as they say. Win-Win.

I have municipal water and am becoming alarmed by the increasing cost of water during the summer. Reusing freshwater fish tank change water for spot watering my plants does make me thinkabout grey-water though. I have not put in any outdoor water feature because of the cost of water. This thread made me start thinking, which is always a danger.

-One of my first thoughts since I have only a crawlspace is "How would I collect and store grey water?"

-Then I thought "how about a small out-door pond?"
-Then I thought "how would I aereate it?"

-AND THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT MY YARD BEING COVERED WITH SOAPSUDS.

-My final thought is "I'll have to re-think this out."

Not using grey water, but used water from the hot tub last weekend. No chemicals had been added for a couple of weeks.

We are in a drought, had a limb cut down and have hostas in sun...... so any water for a few things was much needed.

Having all those soapsuds would keep a few bugs away!
We were in the Ames Iowa area yesterday and couldnt believe all the Japanese Beetles.....they were freaking me out!
Like a swarm of bees in the air only all over the garden we were at.

I didn't know you were driving by trudy, or I would have had all my Hosta under camouflage netting ! hahahah
I had better go count them ;)
