Recycle potting soil?

Hi All,

I'm totally excited about growing lettuce and some other greens indoors after reading this forum! I have some nice "self-watering" planters that were basically taking up space in the garage after the last tomato was harvested a few months ago. Now, I want to put them into action indoors. I'm hoping for some help, though, from those more experienced than I am in this area...

My planters were filled with a soil-less potting mixture consisting of Canadian peat, limestone, perlite, and compost. I've removed the old plant root balls from the summer's planting. Can I use the potting mix again? There are trace thin roots from the tomatoes, which I'm thinking might decompose and help the mixture. I would also plan on adding some fertilizer.

Or should I just dump in all in the garden beds and start with new potting mix?

Any help or recommendations from others who have done this would be greatly appreciated.

eric
