The first maple appears to be Red Maple, the second is Sugar Maple, the third is Red Maple again, and the last one is Norway Maple.

That makes more sense than my reply in the trees forum. Check the sap color to see for sure.

Thanks oyu both for your responses. The two examples that you've identified as red maples make sense. As far as IDing the Norway and Sugar maples is concerned- when you describe the Norway sap as "milky" does it actually appear to be white (like milk or glue?) or is it just cloudy? I was trying to look at the sap yesterday but it wasn't obviously cloudy on what I expected to be the Norway.

If I wait until the trees produce seeds I suppose it will be a bit easier to tell which is which.

Shooting from the hip I'd say they were all red maples except for the one with the obvious Norway maple features. The one with the more divided lobes might perhaps be a Freeman maple, the commonly planted hybrid between red and silver maples.

I guess No. 3 would be a sugar maple, leaf looks like Norway but bark and twig don't. Probably not a red maple anyway, with those untooted leaf margins. More than a trunk sprout to look at would help.

I suppose with those long, curved tips the last one would be sugar maple as well. Individual leaves of those two (Norway and sugar maples) can be similar, but it is easy to tell when the whole tree is in view, with all of its leaves, buds and other parts (including sap) accessible.
