Autumn blaze maple woes

We planted this tree in late fall 2011. It has a 3 inch trunk. Last summer was quite warm and dry in south-central Kansas and the leaves turned brownish and mostly fell before the normal fall defoliage. I had increased the watering during that summer to 2 drip heads for 4 hours every 4 days. It also gets water from the sprinkler system, every other day, about 15 minutes. The grass-free area around the trunk is about 5 feet across, but some weeds have taken root there. This spring the tree leafed out as you can see in the picture. The tops of the branches are bare, and the leaves appear to be looking as they did last year. Is this stress, or is there something else going on, and will it survive?
