You should have been watering the heck out of it last summer...were you?

If not..well...it might pull through. This year, make sure it gets plenty of water. One deep watering a week.

Thanks for your response. I thought I was watering it enough, as the ground around it was damp most of the time. Maybe increasing the size of the depression around the tree might help- allow more water to soak in?
This year I have increased the frequency of watering so ill see if it works.

I would say you didn't water it nearly enough.

i've planted a couple blaze maples just like yours. during the 2012 drought I was out there every night soaking each tree for 15 minutes from a full blast hose. probably 60 gallons per tree, per night. every night. all summer.

this year the trees are growing like weeds. huge full growth. every other day they push new leaflets out. probably 2' of growth already this year.

an autumn blaze maple is part silver maple - which is basically a swamp tree and thrives on constant water. I used to have a silver maple sucking off my septic system it grew to 50' tall & wide in 10 years. no joke.
