There are also several lovely (and relatively inexpensive, depending on your tastes) sales in April and May -- check out in particular the Beltsville Garden Club sales (#1 April 19, #2 May 14), the American Horticultural Society sale at River Farm (April 22-23), the William Paca House sale in Annapolis (May 7), the Green Springs sale May 14. I don't bother with the National Arboretum sales -- far too crowded, and few really good bargains.

Unfortunately, the National Arboretum sale is the same day as the northern Virginia plant swap, April 30.

I find the Arboretum sale to be very hit-or-miss; sometimes I find exactly what I'm looking for, sometimes not. But there are always a huge number and wide variety of plants, and usually a good mix of common and hard-to-find plants. You're right about it getting crowded--it's a very big event. It's worth the price of joining FONA (Friends of the National Arboretum) to be able to shop a day early to get the best selection and avoid the crowds.

Unfortunately, the FONA sale doesn't help someone with plants to swap. Definitely recommend the VA Swap on 4/30.
