Winter Sowing zone 3/4 annuals

Is it to early to winter sow annuals like salvia, osteosermum, Asters, morning glories, datura and holly hocks?

I know I can do the hardy annuals now. But I am not sure if these are considered hardy or not.

I am asking because the closer it gets to April, the less time I am going to have to Winter sow. In fact if it's not done by March 21st or so it won't get done.

I've had good luck with hollyhocks and asters that I have winter sown in the dead of winter. However, morning glories and datura I have not had good luck in winter sowing them.

Winter sowing has more to do with the temperature being below the temperature for germination, does it not? If so, I would think you could winter sow in zone 4 right thru march. Just follow the directions on the winter sowing thread and wait for germination. It won't happen till the soil in the containers reaches the optimum temp for that seed, right?

Maybe I got it bassakwards?
