what's going on with the floor? how about a darker paint color for just the lower cabinets? maybe something in a charcoal gray, or forest green? nice contrast with the countertops. but won't seem dark because you'll leave the upper ones same or similar light color.

I have teal cabinets that are just the right mix of blue and green, and the vibrant hue is tempered with a touch of gray. The result is a sophisticated yet striking color, which contrasts with a bank of white cabinets and classic tile.

I say leave the cupboards as is and change the backsplash for color and a "statement". A subway tile in any color you fancy would look great.

I love Design Freedom's suggestion of darker lower cabinets and lighter top cabinets. Also - go with Darzy's suggestion of subway tiles. I have them and they are so clean and versatile looking.
