It needs something to climb, but that can be a good trellis, a lattice, or even an inresting branch.

I don't often fertilize mine, but then, mine could be fuller.

the more you fertilize them the more they will grow (they already grow fast) and the less flowers they will produce.

You pretty much plant 'em in full sun and leave 'em. They are pretty easy.

Did she give you a plant? Or just seeds? If she gave you seeds I soak mine overnight in room temp water for better germination.

I have an 8ft tall arbor that mine grow up and engulf. I tried planting them on a 4 ft trellis and it was completely overwhelmed. They will grow 15ft or more so they do lovely on an arbor or garden gate. I always intend to fertilize, but in reality, rarely do. They are full and beautiful anyway. Require no real care except to retwine around the posts occasionally and to cut off the seed pods when they go to seed.

FYI... at least it's true for me here
about putting them on a free standing trellis..
if the trellis runs north / south . most of the flowers will be on the western side...
if it goes east / west most of the flowers will be on the southern side..
