peepers!!!

Oh My Goodness...WE HAVE PEEPERS! YES! Imagine my surprise as I got out of my car at the mail box this afternoon. PEEPERS! Now, I can not say that they are in full chorus as yet, but the first strong, brave little cuties are singing their little hearts out as I type. I can not hear them in the wetlands that are behind our house, but the ones that live in the pond across the street are happy, happy, happy!

This seems a little early and, they may retreat back into the mud as some cold weather settles in on Wednesday, but today, March 13th, the Peepers are singing in Clinton, CT. Clinton sits on Long Island Sound so we may be one of the southern most spots in New England but, it's a start.

So, it's official...SPRING IS HERE! Let the rejoicing begin!

Well, that beats your previous record of March 24 in 2004! I really hope that means the rest of spring is right behind! I'll check again tonight to see if our peepers in the old cranberry bog are awake.

If people post when they hear the peepers in their area, I'll try to record them for this year, if iVillage gives me my editing rights back.

None here yet and none expected with dropping temperatures this week but Claire, thank you for the recording. What a thrilling sound at the end of winter.

Like a choir of spring angels loud and strong. It's peeper time!

Hey, I just got an email from my Dad, who also lives on the CT shore (Westbrook), and he reported hearing his first peepers today, too!! Hooray!! I know the upcoming cold will quiet them for a while, but, we have Claire's wonderful recording until then. Have to tell you, Claire, when I played it, I couldn't help but smile...

I have some tonight in Old Mystic, also wood frogs who are usually first to make noise :)

Thanks so much for letting us know, Sooey. Even though ours won't be out for a bit yet, it's good to know that spring is on its way.

What a strangely warm winter it has been. If Sooey heard peepers then as far as I'm concerned it's spring.

Yes cady and all...It is official. I opend my front door last night at about 9:00 and, not only could I hear them but, they were loud and in full voice. I went to bed at 11:00 and could even hear them with no windows open. It was almost magical. *sigh*

That's exciting...I love peepers. Spring is in the air!! Thanks for sharing the information. I'll keep my ears open.

Yep! Got them here too. When I went outside last night to put out some winter-sowing containers, I heard them!

    Hi,

We don't have any peepers near me, but today for the first time, when I went outdoors, I could smell that very distinctive smell of spring! I know the temps are supposed to get down to the teens later in the week, but maybe next week, we will get nice spring weather?

    :-)

Someone else is happy the frogs have woken up!

(actually, there are 2 blue herons in the backyard...I am waiting for the green heron and the night heron to arrive.)

    peregrinekt,
What a beautiful shot of the GB Heron! How lucky you are to have those creatures in your own back yard...thanks for posting that shot.

Yup! Heard them in Milford and Waturbury earlier this week.

Indeed spring in on our heals. Driving to work this morning I noticed all the GREEN popping up...vinca, onion grass, ditch lilies, daffodils.

Well, I'm in San Jose for business this week and I heard them here too! But I guess this doesn't count :) They have blooming trees, green grass, daffs in full flower and even daylillies in bud. I hate Californians, even though I was born here.

    Peregrinekt, that's just beautiful!

I haven't checked for peepers yet, they tend to be later on the Cape, most years, anyway. The herring are running though, that's another sure sign that spring is on its way.

Got back this weekend from a two-week business trip to Korea. From what I saw on the weather websites and in talking to locals it was not a fun couple of weeks up here, mostly cloudy, cold and rainy with a few flurries. Today, however, it finally felt like spring, sunny with temps breaking into the low 50's. Should get even better as the week progresses. The ground is finally thawing, although it is still frozen solid on the north side of the house. At least most of the snow is gone. From the look of the hardpack drive and the farm road mud season has begun.

No signs of peepers up here, but my pond is still frozen, so the symphony is probably at least a week away.

Was hoping to see some bulbs peeking up through the ground, but I guess it's too early for that, too. I planted over 150 bulbs for the first time last fall and am anxious to see some spring color from them. Perhaps, they became squirrel food?

Will post as soon as I hear the peepers (maybe next weekend).

OK, I got my editing rights back (long story, inadvertently lost during changeover to iVillage, restored by Tamara/GW after a series of emails).

I'm updating the FAQ on "When do the first peepers peep in New England" to reflect 2006 sightings, er.. hearings.

I'll add any new hearings (incidents?) if they're posted. Hey, as an antidote to cabin fever it works for me.

Took my dog out on the trail today for a hike and came across a L O U D chorus of peepers! Chico, my 11-month old dog, didn't know what they were! They were music to my ears!

Where are you? Zone 6 in CT? RI or MA?

I just went out to check here in Plymouth, MA and heard the first few soloists under a clear starry sky! The wave has reached the SE coast.

    Claire

We have them too!!! so exciting! drove thru the resevoir last night and was sung too.

    I am in Cheshire BTW

I'm in Acton, MA. These were no soloists - it was a full choir!

Last night I went to our town library next to a wetland and what did I hear...a chorus of peepers!!! It was beautiful! I live in Wayland, MA. I don't know if they have been peeping for a few days or not. Certainly get outside today!

I am usually an early morning poster, but since tomorrow's April 1, I wanted the fact to be known that we have peepers singing in southern Maine (Saco to be exact)! March 31, Claire!

That has to be the earliest yet. There are only 3-4 of them that I can tell, but they're singing.

    veilchen:

    March 31 it is.

You reported April 8 in 2005 and April 15 in 2004. One week earlier each year. At that rate (if it continues, of course) the peepers will be competing with the groundhogs on Groundhog Day in 2014! I wonder what will happen if the peepers see their shadow before the groundhog does ...

Peepers here, in Hollis Center, maine, April 1!

Zone 4 already! -- and tonight was only the first night of nearly full chorus here in Zone 6b. It always amazes me that spring spreads north up the inland areas before it settles in on the coast.

We've had them for a few days, here, too. And I'm pretty sure I've heard the returning song of the Baltimore Orioles, too, but I haven't seen them yet.

We heard them last night for the first time here in southern, coastal Maine!

Heard them last night in the Berkshires!!

    They're really LOUD tonight!

    Bring it on...
