Perhaps the cast iron plant, its technical name Aspidistra?

You'd have to check the heights on these but a couple more that might work are Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) Asparagus sprengeri (Asparagus Fern) and Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen). Keep in mind variegated varieties need more light. I think Sansaveria (Snake Plant) also will grow in low light, now let's hope my spelling is correct :o).

I'd suggest that there are enough different cultivars of Aglaonema alone to select from, and this is one of the easiest low light level plants to grow, and also has a more attractive form than the spiky Sanseverias, which are more specimen type plants than background. The Piggy Back plant, Tolmeia menziesii is also pretty tolerant of low level light conditions, as is the Spider Plant, Chlorophytum comosum v. variegata. If you can find them locally, some of the bromeliads such as Nidularium innocentii does very well as an indoor plant under low light conditions.

I vote for Aglaonemas as well.

If you have a similar space in an area with adequate light, you can always buy two plants and trade them each week when you check on them.

Try a ZZ Plant or a Dracaena marginata. A 6" pot size for either of them should fit the bill for your height requirements..good luck!

I also recommend Zamioculcas (zz plant). It needs little water and almost no light.

Depending on the space available, you could try a kentia palm. They're fairly slow growers indoors so you'd be able to enjoy a juvenile for some time. A lady palm (rhapis) would add an exotic touch. And there's always the good ol' standard philodendron, not all of which need to climb.
