It is my experience that transplanting shrubs and trees is best done when they are dormant - like now. Once they wake up in spring they are putting energy into making leaves and flowers. Transplanting them at that time forces them to also have to concentrate on producing more roots as well. So you did fine. Make sure to keep them watered if we don't get rain or if it gets cold and windy.

That said - I have been known to transplant trees and shrubs in the dead of summer when a jackhammer is needed to break into the dried, cracked clay. So always take my advice with a grain of salt.

I'll just post to add to your reassurance. Like Muddysocks said, this is a great time to transplant leaf-losing fruit trees (while they're dormant), so if you moved the bulk of the apple's roots with it, I bet it will be just fine. In fact, this is prime shipping/planting time for all manner of bare-root dormant plants (witness the large box of bare-root fruit trees from Raintree nursery on my doorstep, lol)

I bet the rhodie will be fine too.

muddysocks and grant in seattle, thanks both for your reassurance! I'm wondering if we'll get fruit this year. It's a 5 way grafted semi dwarf and last year we had apples on all 5 grafts. Well, at least we had some rain to get it watered. Have fun planting your trees!! I wish we had room for more.
