I haven't tried them, but I definitely plan to try quinoa this year. Thanks for reminding me that it's out there for the tryin'. :)

I never got around to planting the Quinoa last year but plan to do better this year. It is supposed to be an ornamantal too, but the seed heads sound difficult to winnow. Amaranth I grew for grain was a bear too.

I am going to try Okahijiki in my Aquaponics setup. Some things are doing well there and some not so well.

Well, I discovered tonight there is another Salsola- soda,(genus of tumbleweed) being grown, called Agretti, an Italian vegetable. I'm wondering if anyone has heard of or grown it. I've already got the Okahijiki (Salsola komarovi) so I'll probably just grow it for now.

"Very tender Agretti can be used raw as a component of tossed salads; simply rinse and dry, then break or cut up the tender parts and add to the salad. More usually, the edible stalks are separated from the root, rinsed and blanched for up to ten minutes, then drained, drizzled with oil and lemon juice, and served as a green or warm salad. Locally, raw Agretti takes the place of the closely related Okahijiki (Salsola komarovi) in sushi, where the tartness, saltiness and texture find a good home."

I grew quinoa last year. It did great. I need to figure out a better way of threshing, though. It took me forever to get the seeds off.

Amaranth seeds were really hard to thresh, too, there is a prickly part of the seed head that gets into the seed mix.

I'm going to try to grow both the Quinoa and the Okahijiki this year, though.
