'Rubella' is a male clone (despite the feminine sound of the name), so if berrying is desired, you will need to obtain identified female plants as well. Generally, in an averaged size garden, anywhere within the garden will afford ample pollination opportunities but as skimmias are rather specific in their locational preferences, they tend to be planted relatively close together. For best health and appearance, organic, moisture retentive soils in partial to full shade is most desirable.

'Rubella' is a great male choice, producing large, long panicles of very fragrant flowers over a long period in winter. I actually prefer male forms to the females for better flower display - berries are not that high on my list of priorities :-))

Grouping using both kinds allows both male flowers and berries to be seen in the same area. Plus, skimmia is not really a specimen caliber plant holding its own in isolation. Small drifts of it are more pleasing. Large drifts are overkill.

Perhaps I shouldn't use skimmia. I want an evergreen, flowering shrub for a small bed by the front door, shade for at least 1/2 the day, sandy but improved soil. Not more than around 5 ft in height when mature. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone.
