All of the hazlenut varieties thrive here and yield well.

Your main difficulty is keeping the squirrels, crows and Steller Jays from stripping the tree before you can get to it. They can take every nut off the tree in one day.

Even cheaper than the native plant sales, try to get some nuts and plant them. You can grow a grove in no time.

The native seems to be a rather scant producer, I've never seen one with a high number of nuts. If human consumption is the priority plant Eastern Filbert Blight resistant selections of orchard varieties developed by Oregon State University.

The native hazelnuts produce more than we ever see, since the critters get to them so fast. But the eastern filberts, having been hybridized specifically for production, would produce a lot more, and attract more critters too.

Chestnuts produce well here, and we don't have chestnut blight. Most every other nut needs either a longer hotter summer or a warmer drier spring than we get here. A neighbor has a walnut tree that feeds the squirrels and rats very nicely, but it isn't loaded with nuts like I've seen in California.

Pine nuts might do well here. Dunno. Burnt Ridge is a good source of info, as suggested above.

Cane and bush berries, and apples, are our real fortes.
