It's a hard choice! But I believe that less flowers on a nicely shaped plant are better than lots of flowers on an ugly plant. Our garden club had a pruning demo last year and her first plant was a choisya and she ended up cutting a lot out -- more than she wanted to, but when I asked the owner later in the year he was quite pleased with the way it was rebounding.

My Mexican Orange looked so bad I cut it back to stumps. It was lying flat on the ground. Maybe I have cut it back too far, maybe not, time will tell. I thought of driving a stake and tying it up but some of the foliage looked so ratty and ugly.
If it comes back next winter I'm going to stake and tie first, and cover with Remay in January, this seems to be the month the foliage gets hit where I am, will let you know later if it survives, We just had one big snow dump in November, that's all it took to flatten it.

I'd say wait a couple weeks until this upcoming cool spell is past, and we are really sure there won't be any more hard frosts, then chop it. And yes, forgo the flowers for a while. I'm debating doing the same with my overgrown Grevillea 'Poorinda Constance', except I am not entirely sure it will come back!

My Mexican Orange looks hideous! Hardly any blooms and the leaves are all burnt and some have discoloration. Is that from winter damage? I think I'll give it a really good haircut like ian wa says when all frost danger is past. Hopefully, that will help it out!

If it was mine, I'd let it bloom and then I'd prune it back. I don't like pruning mine quite this early anyway, and I'm still concerned about a late cold snap. But, it's your plant so let us know what you do and how it works out. :)

Mine isn't going to win any beauty contests any time soon, but it sounds like it fared better than most. Keep us posted!

I know, all of a sudden the pruners can get a will of its own. If it's any help, I've pruned mine hard before bloom, and got a small late autumn bloom.

I got a few small specimens from a friend, they are having a great blooming, but do I need to prune off the flower heads once the petals fall off?
