I planted some shelling peas in early February, replanted the ones that didn't come up (about half), plus some sugar snap peas in early March. All are now about 2" high. In other words, I didn't gain anything from starting earlier.

They're under poly row covers, in raised beds with southern exposure. My experience with peas is that they grow really slowly until late May, then take off. I'm in the foothills though, with very cold soil. Everything grows really slowly.

I planted some sugar snaps in a washtub a month ago and kept it in the g/h until the peas were up 1 1/2. Then on the only sunny day, thought I would put the tub outside. Since then, the slugs have eaten the shoots and I am back to square one. Put diotomatious earth on top to slow slugs down and they are starting again. Interestingly, I also planted peas directly into the ground outside at the same time and they are now bigger than the ones in the washtub.

Super Sugar Snap were planted Feb. 15, now about 2" tall. This is about standard for me. Open garden, raised beds, no cover. I like putting them in early; I know if I waited a month it would probably make no difference to harvest date, but it gets me in the veggie garden mindset to plant my peas.

I got tired of starting peas at Prez Day because they just sit for so long. This year I started them about the beginning of March and they are now about 3" tall. They are outside during the day but in at night, not yet planted out. Don't feel I lost any time by starting them later. They sprouted much faster, being started later.
