Black-eyed Susan vines

Does anyone have a tried and true technique for growing these in our cool climate? I will be starting them inside, but aside from a south window, won't be able to give them extra light or heat.

I've tried them before and not had much luck (they sprout, but they don't grow much beyond a few inches), and I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
