You can cut akebia back hard; it responds well. I have reduced an old vine to less than half its size and it regrew vigorously.

I cut my akebia almost to the ground and, thinking I had killed it, I dug it up and moved it to an inconspicuous place. It came back looking better than all the years I hardly ever pruned it.
