Looks like a lovely native Oemleria cerasiformis, aka Indian Plum.

Is this the plant that is so fragrant right now? I was walking in the woods and just loved the scent.

Thanks, Lauraann! That's it, all right. And the fragrance is certainly plum-blossom-like. I wonder why the ones near me never seem to set fruit? Perhaps I just need to pay closer attention.

I used to transplant those from properties that were to be subdivided, to our landscape at home, about 25 years ago.

My mother had 2 acres, then.

The lower acre had quite a few, but I added many more to the upper acre.

Characteristic of seasonal wetlands, forming thickets on river terraces and other places that become damp in winter by dry out during the summer.

Neat! I don't pay as much attention to our native plants as I should, so I really enjoyed the pic and replies/ID. Thanks!

In fact, it's

"A shade-tolerant/intolerant, submontane to montane, Western North American deciduous shrub distributed more in the Pacific than the Cordilleran region. Occurs in maritime to submaritime summer-dry cool mesothermal climates on fresh to very moist, nitrogen-rich soils often with a fluctuating groundwater table. Its occurrence decreases with increasing latitude and continentality. Scattered in broad-leaved forests on water-receiving sites (most often on floodplains) with melanized and often gleyed soils. Commonly associated with Cornus sericea, Sambucus racemosa, and Symphoricarpos albus. Characteristic of Moder and Mull humus forms*."

You can actually get an idea of what a site may be like and what other kinds of plants you can grow on it by what Indicator Plants are already there.

*Of course, if on the other hand Muller and Scully human forms are observed on a site it can be taken as an indication that there is something about the site that has to do with matters other than gardening.

The plants are dioecious.
Some are male and some are female.
I had several male plants in my woodland and finally found a female plant to add.
