Yes we got hail in March quite heavy luckily short lasting.

SNOWING hard and heavy here in Oregon City right now, big white fluffy flakes, coming down like a white curtain.

This is the 4th consecutive day we've seen snow and it's snowing hard now. Very pretty and unsettling at the same time.... I should be outside enjoying Spring chores, not inside with the heat turned up :)

Yep, it's snowing here right now, too. Unbelievable! Yesterday we had a bit of hail and it's been SO cold. Today there are some of the biggest snowflakes I've ever seen carpeting the back yard.

Snow here too on S. Vancouver Island - snowed hard in the night and is now raining, everything wet, grey, slushy, messy, wintery - bleahh!

Woke up to snow and it's still snowing here in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. Yesterday I weeded several flower beds thinking to myself winter is finally over, spring is finally here. Ha, think again!

We had about 2 1/2 inches here last night, and it's continuing to snow off and on today. We're at 1100' altitude east of Kelso.

We had about 1.5" yesterday and 2" today and it is still on the ground and flurrying in north Clark County WA. The snow is heavy and many of the daffodils are face down ;-( jwww

At this time of year I'm usually outside burning calories instead of sitting inside burning fuel. Expected lows are in the twenties tonight in SW WA. Looking out my windows are snow covered yellow euphorbia myrsinites that have seeded themselves with purple aubretia. In the distance the snow is making a golden weeping willow weep more. My husband buried my beloved old Scottie dog a year ago near there. It is very pretty outdoors with snow frosting but I'm not going out till at least it's 50 F.

Olympia has been getting snow flurries. Nothing sticking though. But the roads were slushy a couple of mornings. Glad I still have my winter tires on!

Another night of it! We got at least 6" last night, but I hope it's coming to an end soon. After all, it's almost April, isn't it?

What a whacky couple of days. Today started with light showers, then sunbreaks, then more showers, then sunbreaks, then hail, then flatout rain, then a break and then tonight, a blizzard for our hot tub enjoyment.

In between, I pretended it was actually spring and planted 8 'Rokey's Purple' aubrietas, 8 heucheras of various color, two dicentra 'Gold Heart', two hellebores, 'Ivory Prince' and 'Silver Lace', and two hebes, 'Red Edge' and 'Patty's Purple'. Somehow it made it feel like spring even though it didn't feel like spring ;-)

It's like the whole Pacific Northwest has been: Hail, snow, sun...repeat. For a week.

I'm ready for real spring! It was nicer in FEBRUARY!

Out and about yesterday, huge hailstorm in Clackamas in late afternoon, left the upper elevations about 2" thick with white, driving around was trippy. Snow, hail, sleet, rain, and more snow pellets, big outbursts of ice crashing to the ground in pounding sheets.

Yep, snow and hail in Portland every day since Thursday. Downtown Portland hardly ever gets snow.

Watching the hail piling up on my balcony yesterday wasn't at all fun.

Just looked at my deck temperature at it's 29 degrees. Wish it would stop freezing. All sorts of buds and flowers and tender leaves trying to survive out there and these freezes at this time of year seem too harsh :_(

just got more today. :( I was almost done clearing out an area to start my very first garden. boo!

On the weather news they're saying NW Oregon now has RECORD snowpack.

Sure beats drought. Water powers everything here. Thank God no watering restrictions this summer!

I heard on the KGW forecast last night at 11/p that the Portland area may actually get more snow this weekend. Very cold air mass dropping down. It's still snowing heavily in the mountains.

Lots of blossoms and baby leaves in this yard. Guess snow would be much better than the hard freezes they're also talking about. Yikes!

And we need LOTS more rain. Way below average rainfall. It needs to warm up a bit, lows in the 40s would be nice instead of 30s.

Drove through several miles of blizzard in Everett, WA early morning of April 15.

Any ideas on what to do to protect all the newly forming leaves and emerging flowers from this unseasonable snow/freeze forecasted??? I'm in Portland suburbia.

My garden is just starting to take shape and, although I know this is the way nature works, I'd hate to have it killed off before I even get to enjoy it a little.

Many hardy plants will not be damaged. Others will bounce back from it. Anything tender and portable can be moved under cover - if it's truly tender it should still be under cover from when it was brought in last summer/fall.

I had put away my hoop cover and had my cold frames leaning against the house for the season when I heard the forcast. After mowing in light rain because my front yard needed it, I put my hoop cover back up and covered my warm weather seeds and seedlings with my cold frames. It's insane. I can't remember snow this late in the year and I've been alive for 36 years.

My snow peas are up 6" and I am at 1000' . As far as I can understand they are predicting temps to about 34 or 35 on the valley floor so who knows what it will be up here. If we have snow at 34 or even 30 I think it will be ok but if it drops below that or if we get the cold and no snow I'm worried.....any thoughts??? jwww

I've got 4 inches in Mountlake Terrace and it's still coming down! I didn't get the cold frame over my corn until the bed had 2-3 inches over it. Oh well, hopefully they'll survive. I also hold out hope for my peas, broccoli and radishes that couldn't be covered with my existing covers. If my garden doesn't work I'll be very disgruntled with Mother Nature... /boggle

It's been snowing off and on since about midnight Thursday. We're at 1100 feet elevation. We're getting some hail and rain mixed in, too.

Your peas should be fine. They can handle temps. below freezing.

Well, yesterday it felt like January outside, I was thinking this is not typical April weather, last night the ground was white with hail. Then came the thunder and lightning. We woke up this morning to 6" of snow and it's still coming down fast and furious. WHAT HAPPENED TO SPRING!!! I've been around for a long time, never seen anything like it.

We got more then 5'' yesterday in Brier. You can see big snowflakes on image. This morning is beautiful but I prefer to see 'snow' from flowering trees in April. O, well. Don't think that i will have fruits this year, sad to see flowers under snow.

I do not BELIEVE this!! Surely I am having an halllucination but it looks like several inches of snow and still falling! Well all we can do is say a little prayer for the tender little buds and blooms and shoots underneath. I heard this was the latest snow in the the year since 1950.

Galcho, we're so close to Brier we can hit it with a ball from my front yard. I love your greenhouse. All I had to cover was a hoop cover and a few left over windows as cold frames.

As for snow in Seattle, the previous record for a late snow was April 17, 1972. I was 1 month old at the time. Since we had snow today, I guess the record is now April 19.

Thanks for letting me know my peas should be fine. I was worried because my frame won't fit between my trellis.

Sinfonian, i found out greenhouse very useful in our area for growing tomatoes. Last year was my first year with greenhouse and i got first tomatoes and cucumbers much earlier then i would have them while planting just outside.
Not sure maybe hoop covered with plastic do the same but i don't like to set and remove it every year.
I collected a lot of containers and i used them to cover some plants in my garden before this snow. I worry about my fruit trees.

Sinfonian, I enjoyed your blog - something to read on a snowy day! You are certainly throwing yourself into it full speed ahead. It's wonderful if you can start your young family off with healthy, home grown food, and an enjoyment of gardening. You are pushing the zone envelope quite a bit with your warm weather crops -- you'll find things will grow quicker and happier later in the year, especially when we have a cold spring like this year. But you've got nothing to lose but a few seeds so it's fun to try the early sowings. Last year, I embraced lasagna gardening and had great success. With gardening, you are always learning. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
