Bark torn from Doug Fir

During our septic tank installation a chunk of bark was gouged from one of the Douglas Firs on our property. It's leaking sap, and I'm worried that I need to do something to help it (a large band-aid perhaps?). The exposed part is about 6" x 6". Do I need to do anything?

I'd be more concerned about the condition of the root system.

This damage seems minor compared to the what bears do every year to their scratching trees and most of those trees seem to survive. jwww

I agree, the bark seems less concerning than the root system. If they were close enough to hit the tree, they were digging and driving over and over the roots. Get a consult from a "certified arborist". Some free, some not.
