My sister has a small yard in West Seattle that gets part sun. She is having landscaping done, and really likes plants like Japanese maples, euphorbias, and grasses. Her designer suggested flax, and lots of it, which she and her husband really don't care for. Anyone have some suggestions that might work the same way? They would prefer low maintenence. I don't know what to call her style other than urban northwest, it's very different than my style. Any ideas would be great.

Probably that was New Zealand flax (Phormium) rather than flax (Linum). Spurges, grasses and New Zealand flax indicate an architectural plant theme is being produced, in which case other bold foliage would be used as well - if that is, in fact the idea. If the clients don't like that kind of thing then adding more of it would be a step in the wrong direction. What, exactly it is about the Phormium that bothers them it would be helpful to know. Also what you think the theme is supposed to be and if they actually like the rest of it - or might instead like most of the plants indicated to be replaced by different kinds.
