Sporting Question

Sally's question about hostas reverting got me to thinking :-o

Why couldn't her Guacamole be sporting to either Fried Green Tomatoes or Fried Bananas? If those are sports from Guacamole why couldn't her Guac be sporting one of them?

Is there some kind of genetic thing or DNA or something that would define whether it is FGT or FB.

I am totally dumb when it comes to all this kind of stuff, but I still don't know why any other Guac couldn't sport FGT or FB, depending on what the leaf color turns out to be.

boy .. i can tell how confused you are.. because i cant make sense of the question ...

but that wont stop US ... lol ...

genetic testing probably could tell us IF FGT and FB are the same ... and further testing could tell us which she has ... the problem being.. who is going to spend thousands of dollars on such testing ... to find out.. when each plant can probably be bought for 10 bucks ...

here are some more basics ...

hosta are inherently unstable ... sporting further ahead to new stuff.. reverting to where it came from ...

it can happen in your garden on single plants.. but when you go into tissue culture.. the shear fact that you take that one plant .. and divide it thousands. even hundreds of thousand times ... you greatly increase the chances of sporting or reverting ...

if you have two TC labs.. and each gets the green plant from edged plant.. all to often.. both labs name it... and sell it ... and they really aren't interested in spending thousands for the DNA testing.. in fact.. most often ... they might not even know the other one is producing and selling it .. until many years later ...

does this answer your questions.. or at least clarify it enough.. so that you can ask the next question.. so i can clarify it for you??? or confuse you more.. lol

Both of my Jewel of the Nile had an all gold eye this year (which I have separated and planted elsewhere). Now, am I correct in that these were reversions to Dee's Golden Jewel and not sports?

Jewel of the Nile does that frequently. It's pretty much the same answer as you see here about FB or FGT sporting from Guacamole.
I think you'll find that because it is so very obvious that Dee's Golden Jewel is the yellow version of JOTN, most people just accept it. It's just a tiny bit possible that you have a different sport. Like if it was a mini or super thick like tetraploid you'd be able to tell.
I have not bought Dee's Golden Jewel, because I feel I already have it through this process... I divided it off JOTN and labeled it as such (both DGJ/sport of JOTN.)
If I was unsure, I'd get a Dee's Golden Jewel and grow them together for comparison.

    Dave,

I agree that it is most probably DGJ and have labeled both as such. Isn't it funny that BOTH of my JOTN did it in the same year? Do you ever lose your JOTN completely this way? That was my fear so I divided Dee out of there pronto.

    i THOUGHT .... always a scary presumption....

that jewel was found in productions of dee .... so jewel is reverting to dee ....

someone.. while visiting the garden ... maybe dave bowe ... that sooner or later.. jewel will just disappear .. because it seems that EVERYONES jewel is reverting ...

a better question would be why sell jewel if it is so unstable ... go figure.. ken

Whether the whole plant would prefer to change itself to Dee's Golden Jewel or JOTN is a neat question...
Theoretically more chlorophyll is preferable so JOTN should predominate. I think the leaves should get bigger and block the sun from the DGJ, once the clump gets big enough. Then the DGJ eyes would not grow as fast, and eventually be lost.
But, maybe there is a twist that we don't understand.
Perhaps it is easier for the plant to produce the solid color form than the multi color form, even if it is the lighter color. Could the solid yellow buds be less sensitive to the hormone that inhibits eye emergence?
Maybe the edge color tends to dominate the center color, as we see a lot of light centered plants go to all dark.
    Possible...
    Sure makes you wonder.
I did indeed observe that in your garden, Ken.
Why sell it as JOTN? Well most people I have talked to about JOTN really like the fact that the leaves vary so much, so it's one of those things that sets JOTN apart in the garden. Sort of like enjoying a streaked plant.

Ok, what I'm trying to ask is, IS it possible that a Guac could indeed sport to FGT or FB. I guess it wouldn't be an "official named" sport because without that expensive DNA testing there would be no way of knowing for sure, but it is possible that it could sport, right?

I'm really not good at putting my thoughts down in words, so I hope I'm not coming out sounding like a complete moron, lol.

    Confusing the confused,

Yes it is possible, without a doubt. In fact I would say it is extremely probable that Guacamole will sport to both FGT and to FB. You just can't be 100% sure if it did so in your garden. But I think you can be 99% sure.
