moss covered soil

We recently purchased a home that has beautiful landscaping. On the north side of the house the flower bed soil around the hostas and other plants is covered in moss. Should I remove the moss and cover the soil with bark or leave it alone. I wasn't sure if the moss was harmful to the plants and soil. Thanks for any advice.
