My husband plants them in his veggie garden and he does do it at this time of year and they do fine. He likes Mammoth Giant for the birds.

The bushtits and chickadees have a field day with the Lemon Queen I usually plant.

They grow really fast. You're not too late.

I want to plant a variety of sunflowers for an August wedding.
Is it realistic to try and set up a backdrop of tall flowers with shorter ones in front? Which varieties would do well in southwestern Ontario. (frost until May 15) We are on a farm with heavy clay soil and lots of sun exposure.

I like Lemon Queen, which is a perennial cross. About 5'tall covered with 3" lemon yellow flowers which the insects love. Even though it's a hybrid, it sets tiny sunflower seeds which the birds like.

You plant it once and never have to again. I started with one little chunk and have a huge bed of it now.
