For many years I had a spring yellow/red combination. I had a large grouping of rhodies that bloomed at the same time 1/2 red and the other 1/2 a creamy yellow. I planted red and yellow tulips that bloomed at the same time. I had several yellow variegated Emerald'n Gold Euonymus which looks quite bright in the spring. It was striking and people stopped to look at it, especially when those tulips were coming on strong.

The dogwood flowers are really more off white, but it seemed to me that when there was other yellow in the landscape, the creamy colors seemed to belong to the same color family. I also took advantage of my neighbor's variegated leaf plants with some yellow in them (he had a variegated maple etc)

In the summer, I planted marigolds, etc in yellow and reddish/orangey tones. Other flower colors moved more toward the purple/blue family which seemed to combine well.

I got kind of burned out on the yellow though (and the Euonymus outgrew their space) so I have very little of it now except for the cream colored rhodies which are still very nice.

A classic is combining burgundy foliaged plants with those that have yellow or yellow-green foliage. The juxtaposition makes both plants stand out better than if planted alone. This is very obvious if you look at some of the euphorbias which naturally combine these colors - E. amygdaloides 'Purpurea' or some of the newer hybrids like x martinii, 'Rudolph' or 'Red Martin'.

Blue flowers or bluish foliage (blue fescues, some blue conifers) also compliment yellow tones.

Look at a color wheel - those colors opposite each other (complimentary colors) are naturals for a planting combination. Adjacent colors - like the warm tones of red, yellow and orange - can also make a good combination but often lack the contrast and impact that complimentary colors have.
