oooooohhhh EO! Ive got tears in my eyes! The hostas should be okay right? But it looks like you lost the shade tree and a bush? I wish I could come and help you clean up.

Oh my--I'm thankful, as I'm sure you are, that the tree didn't smash your house, too!
I guess your beautiful Japanese Maple, having been lost this Spring '08 (am I right in that?)
just was destined to be *no more*!!!

I didn't take any 'after' pics of the damage we incurred! I was too anxious to clean up the mess
and regain my yard as it were before!!! Thankfully, we had no major tree damage and no significant
hosta damage beyond dehydrated leaves due to the powerful and sustained high-wind gusts!

I'd be interested to see any others pics. of their pre-and after pics. if they were more alert to
    document the evidence than I!!

This thread would be great on another forum I know of, as well!! ;o)

    E.O.,
I feel your pain .We had a 60' Hickory tree come down right in the middle of my DW's pool. This is dreadful because until it is repaired or replaced she will have time to follow me around and talk to me! Me needz me space!!!

I am so sorry,i know just how you are feeling right now,we still do not have all of our clean up finished.
Thank goodness that tree missed your beautiful home, and you and Pattsy are ok.
The tree has provided you much shade for your hosta bed, will you need to move some of them now?what a lot of work,my heart goes out to you.

When one of our spruce fell across the entire width of our yard I was devastated. It took half my garden and shed with it. I worked all spring and summer to try to get it back to some sort of shape. I recalled "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade". Where my hosta garden once was is now an area to sit and view the waterfall. Its still too sunny for me but my future apple trees will cure that. (now humming Jungle Love, thanx denny)!

Patsy's pine 'Hanna' planted the day her grandmother died.

I'll not move the hosta unless I must.

That Jap Maple was a 5" caliper and is still alive but it is severely damaged?

We have about 15 trees down in the woods, lucky all in all!

    No power for 8 days.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pine 'Hanna' photo

"We had a 60' Hickory tree come down right in the middle of my DW's pool."
    aahostas

The photo is a sasafras of no value, the pine did have value, BIG BUTT we had no structural damage. The losses were more personal.

60' Hickory has real value, depending on how it fell it may have lumber value even vaneer as much as 10,000 probably not but check it out before you have a stack of $10,000 firewood. Don't cut it up until you check that out. Call the Dept of Forestry they will value it for you and probably help market it.

Yes ,we were able to sell our oak tree, the man is coming to get it later in the month,we made more selling it than if we would have used it for fire wood.

Denny,oh for the shame of you, having to talk to your dear, sweet, wife, because of a broken pool.Does she garden?

Yea, now i am singing, what is even worse,i am still singing "Little Hostas"so bad, i am even trying to remember the words,I am sick!
AHHHH,thanks to all of you, i was fine before i came here,or was i?

E.O. Having suvived Charlie in New Smyrna, I sympathize with you. As a Canadian it is something I never wish to experience again.

Sorry for your losses,Butch! Up here in the mountains,we didn't even get a breeze or even rain from Ike. It turned completely away from here. Hope you can salvage your Japanese maple a little bit. Many folks here lost theirs last year from the freeze. Mine were damaged a lot,but are still alive. Phil

"Hope you can salvage your Japanese maple a little bit."
    Phil

I thought it was lost last year in the freeze then the drought that followed, now it is beat up again. God does not like my maple. Actually I lost 5 really nice jap maples last year. There was only one that didn't suffer last year and that pine tree is laying on top of it right now.

Not worth a plug nickle. Twisted from top to bottom.
    Just1more,
She thinks that Hostas are pretty but doesn't take any further interest because it would take her out of the pool. She is perfectly content to float around for hours on end in her aqua floral tube. I call her "The big Cheerio" when I am being "husbandly snippy". It is hard to take criticism when you are soaked with sweat and covered with dirt and chiggers from someone who has been leisurely drifting for hours. Now that the pool is damaged she is free to really evaluate my toil.I miss that pool!!!

Jeff, Thank you no human or building damage, we were lucky. How are your plants doing?

Butch, so sorry for the damage to your garden. Glad that there was not human or building damage.

Breaks your heart all the same.

Butch - they are doing great, especially the Abba Showtime. For others reading this, I joked with Butch about sending me some divisions of his hosta. To my surprise he did. Photo below is left to right H. Northern Halo, H. Abba Showtime and H. Cherry Berry. The Soloman Seal is a gonner, but the Ajuga Chocolate Chip is doing well.

Sort of a faith thing that I could not easily explain but trees and hosta don't bother me.
I assume I get my share of problems and someone else has more problems than I do.

I'll try anyway, we are our memories.
    Can't see the future.
    Can't change the past.
Act in the moment as well as you can because you will remember.

So my memories are full of grand sites and times with and without people. I try as best I can to dwell on the good memories of which I have many including the Pre-Ike photo.

Would you remember these or Post-Ike if you have a choice and I have that choice.

He calls me Coach Papa Butchie.

    She's alright! And the animals.

Even this, something no one has ever reported if anyone ever noticed it. When I told George Schmid about it he called it interesting and wants updates on the results.

I'm blessed, what can I say.
