I planted a new hydrangea this year and it was doing nicely until yesterday when Bambi decided he was hungry. Mine is now definitely non-blooming...

I don't have that variety, but all mine are blooming heavily. Even a small one I dug out of DS's yard last fall.

Dawn, it didn't get cold enough here (coastal) to damage hydrangea buds - on any, including my 4-in-a-row Pia. Could there be other reasons yours are not blooming? Possibly too much shade, or too much fertilizer may result in foliage rather than flowers...

My three Pias are blooming, my two NOIDs are too.

The Komachi had dead bits on the end of its branches. It could possibly be in too much shade so I'll move it this fall. The Pia's got a dressing of steer manure in the spring but that's all. They're definitely not in too much shade.

Annabelle is the only one of my hydrangeas that is blooming.

My two Pias (planted last Fall) are blooming their heads off. They are adorable and I love them.

How much water are they getting?
I wouldn't think shade is the problem if they're getting some sun. I have one plant that only gets a little morning sun and it's one of my best bloomers..........and the darkest purple/blue I've ever seen. My plants never get fed except what little they get from the overspray of the lawn fertilizer.

I didn't realize the Pias were going to stay pink. I assumed they'd turn blue but they are still pink after more than a year in the ground. Pink is fine just not expected.

I just bought a Forever and Ever Double at Lowe's. I hate to buy from them but wanted that variety. It is a rebloomer.

I'm really missing the blocks of colour in my garden. One of the Pia's is actually trying to give me one bloom. I see three tiny little buds at the end of a branch. I'm waiting impatiently.

I seem to remember spreading some old fertilizer I found in the shed this spring. Maybe that combined with the amended soil and manure dressing was just too much of a good thing.

Next year I'll be very stingy.

Our neighbor fertilized one of our NOIDs one year to be helpful when we were on vacation. Screwed up the flower color for years. Was a muddy purple brown green color and not attractive at all. This year it is finally back to blue.

Buyorsell, my Pias were pink for approx the first 4, maybe 5, years they were planted. I'm not one to adjust the PH for hydrangea colors - so left to their own, the Pias now are pink/blue, or maybe pink with distinct violet overtones would describe it. More to my liking really, pink isn't my color but this grouping faces my neighbor on an outer garage wall and pink is her preference.

They are also larger than I had expected with no pruning, only minor shaping in 12 yrs. Up to approx 4', and the rain we had a week ago brought them over for the first time - I clearly need to do some pruning and get them back to a more compact upright size.

I don't know if it was dumb beginners luck or what but almost all of my hydrangeas are spectacular this year. After 6 years on my project, last year I finally got to some semi-shady areas so I started planting the hydrangeas I had selected. Some bloomed that first year, some didn't.

This spring I kept pressing forward so I could finally get done and without knowing any better just decided to fertilize all my non acid lovers with Terosa when I was doing my roses and all I can say is WOW!!!!! My mops like 'Glowing Embers' and 'Nikko Blue' are awesome but I have a raised bed that has mostly lacecaps that knocks my socks off. On one side of the bed I have a 'Blue Wave' sandwiched in between a 'Big Smile' and an 'Angel Lace' and on the other side a 'Preziosa' and a 'Buttons and Bows'.

As far as bloom, my only disappointment so far is my schizo 'Rosea' but I'm cutting it a little slack because it went in last fall ;-)
