Staking Japanese Maples

I have just received a JM Everred as a gift. The trunk was staked. The stake does not go into the rootball. The trunk is tied to the stake in 5 locations. Can I remove the stake after planting? If not, how long should I keep it tied to this stake? I realize that Everred has a weeping habit and that the stake was most likely used to keep the plant tidy at the nursery. BTW..it's about 4 ft. tall right now.

Staking of these often done to build height, so you end up with a fountain instead of a low mound. If it's as tall as you want now, take the stake away.
