I had something like this, turned out to be deadly nightshade but unfortunately, I didn't know that until it had set seed. 10 years later, I'm still pulling it out.

They are member of nightshade, also called Horse Nettle.
They are close relatives of eggplant. The stem has thorn on it and grows a fruit the size of a cherry tomato that become orange color when ripe. I think they also overwinter but mostly propagate via the seeds in the fruit.

PULL THEM OUT BEFORE FRUITING. but they are good to draw flea beetle away from peppers and eggplants.

I am trying to determine the rate of growth and mature size of this magnolia so need to know the variety. Thanks for any info.
