Totally safe fixes for both.

For the Pieris, temporary shade. The problem is heat stress and sunburn.

For the kiwi, more water. The vines are huge and *very* thirsty. Again, the problem is heat stress -- the roots weren't able to supply adequate water to the top.

The Pieris looks like it could use some fertilizer or maybe some epsom salts as well. The leaves that aren't fried look chlorotic.

Soils in and around Portland, except for those that are sandy, have plenty of magnesium. So no need for epsom salts.

It looks like they were planted incorrectly.

The Pieris looks more symptomatic of iron deficiency than magnesium - chlorosis on the new growth. Iron is less available to the plant in higher pH soils. Might try adding a little chelated iron to the soil, and more shade.

Iron deficiency is *very* uncommon in and around Portland.

Another reason for the resemblance to iron shortage is poor root function. And anything that damages roots can be the underlying cause, among them dry soil, underdeveloped roots, root rot (I doubt it here), root loss from transplanting, and more.

Right now, I'll make the wild guess it's all about water.

So, ellen, when you stick your finger into the soil, is it dry, moist or downright soggy? (I'll bet on dry.)
