It's a common name for Leonotis leonurus, a common enough tender perennial. The same folks that come into the garden center looking for Salvia divinorum often ask for lion's tail as well, as it supposedly offers a mild euphoric high and has been used as a substitute for pot. But it has a range of herbal applications aside from this, although teenagers rather than serious herbalists seem to be most interested in acquiring this plant.

FWIW, it favors sunny, dry conditions so your soils should not pose problems. It will also grow in quite a lot of shade. It is not winter hardy here, so containers may be the way to go if you want it to hang around through winter. Because of its preference for dry conditions, I'd not consider this a good candidate for hydroponics.

I'm sorry bossdude that I assumed you were up to no good. I've always heard of heard of Dagga as a reference to pot. And I always tease my hydroponics friends about being secret pot growers. It's just a joke. Leonitis is a beautiful plant. I used to grow it in California next to Pride of Madeira; a gorgeous plant combination. Best of luck with that. I have grown Leonotis leonurus this year in Michigan. (Zone 5). I started it indoors in March. Transplanted into large pots and moved them outside. The results are very good. Big plants (10 to 11 feet tall with lots of blooms). We had a nice summer in terms of heat and sun but I did have to water them often. They look great.

In terms of the "marijuana" reference. . .people do smoke the leaves and/or flowers. I have had the flowers in a tea. I highly doubt that you get a marijuana-type buzz but the tea will cause sleep. However, I would not recommend this as it is apparently addicting or could lead to other problems.
