I don't think they are evergreen anywhere. They weren't in Phoenix when I grew them there. Never tried them here though.

The variety most frequently encountered around here, Acanthus mollis, can be more or less evergreen during mild winters in the warmer micro-climate areas, but won't look as good as it does during the growing season - some die-back is normal.

The variety I grow tends to be evergreen, including last winter. This is the worst time of the year for them actually, they are kind of sulking. I have two varieties, and one is more vigorous and is more healthy looking in winter. Many times they go dormant after flowering, so I cut mine off. If you look at the picture, the shiny darker leaves were on this plant all winter. It can be invasive, and that is why I planted some in this waste zone near my garage.

Like a good number of perennials, they will retain foliage in winter (or most NW winters) but they will not retain it in a 4-5' size :-) Most of the size from an established acanthus comes from new growth put on during the season before flowering. Winter foliage tends to be more basal in nature and depending on the conditions, may not look too wonderful. I'd look for something else if you want a 4-5' evergreen presence year round.

I grew these very successfully (and loved them) in my old place, but have been unable to find any seeds since I moved a couple of blocks away,. I thought them quite spectacular..... does anyone have any seeds or know where I can get some?
