New Zealand flax comes in dwarf, purple cultivars that are available in local garden centers.

Nandina domestica 'Purple Passion' has nice soft leaves year 'round, purple color most of the year, pretty sprays of little pearl-like flowers and, later, berries. When it gets too tall, I cut it back and make a bouquet for the house with the trimmings.

I liked 'Monum' (Plum Passion(R) is a selling name, not a cultivar) too until I had one mildew on me.

I have plants that were labeled Nandina domestica 'Purple Passion' (not PLUM). I don't know whether it's the same plant as Monrovia's or not. I've had it for about 5 years without any mildew. I know nandina can mildew when it doesn't get enough water for a period of time.
