Dotty, I've only seen this bloom once in my lifetime, when I was very young my parents woke me up in the middle of the night and took me over to the neighbors. I think the whole neighborhood was gathered around the dining room table to witness the event. All I can remember about this is, when we came down the hall to the dining room there was an incredible fragrance filling the room and in the middle of the dining room table was a plant with a white flower. If I were in your place right now you couldn't move me with a stick of dynamite. Enjoy, you lucky girl.

Dotty, I have one too! For the last two years it has produced 4 - 5 blooms. They start small, grow bigger and bigger with fleshy spikes on the end, point toward the light and then one night - wow! this huge white scented flower that seems slightly eerie to me. Then the next morning, a wilted flower. The first year I missed them, not knowing I only had one night to see it. They are strange and wonderful!
After Midnight, I have grown quite a few cuttings (very easy) if you ever get down this way I would gladly give you one.

It was! Absolutely lovely and a wonderful scent. It looks like another two will bloom tonight and one the next.

Absolutely beautiful Dotty. My goodness two people growing this plant that I have been looking for, until now I didn't know where I could beg or buy a cutting. Both of you have kindly offered me cuttings, things are looking up. Send me an email when a cutting is available, I don't drive but my DH and I come down island quite often, thank you so much for your kind offer. Aftermidnight, now that the flowering if finished, I'm going to prune this unruly grower so if you are coming down island, give me a call. I'll leave the pruning until you visit. Last night there were 3 flowers open and we had friends in to watch the event. Dessert and Cereus..a nice evening.

I, too, have a plant with 2 buds ready to burst out. And the friend who gave me the plant some yrs ago is in the same situation. Have postponed departure on a bkpk trip because of weather and am afraid I'll miss the spectacle. Is there something about the light this time of year that provokes blooming? My plant hasn't bloomed before and this year I fertilized it more and gave it bloom fertilizer as well, I think. Thanks for the website, which I'll check.

which is an Epiphyllum oxypetallum. I bought another fragrant white, E. anguliger, from them but haven't had it bloom yet. Has anyone grown it? I'm wondering how the fragrance compares. Is anyone interested in trading cuttings?

OTOH a site call NBC Peniocereus greggii(Cereus greggii), see below. Are they discussing the same plant or is there common name confusion?

I looked at the picture for the Cereus greggii and it looks different to my NBC. It is more open like a waterlily and the stamens are in a circle. My NBC had a slightly trumpet shape with the stamens forming the inside floor of the trumpet and the little star flower on it's own stem coming out. I didn't realize there was a whole family of them! Karyl, I can recommend inviting very good friends to share it with!

I believe there are two different night blooming cactus with the same common name which makes it confusing. I have heard them both referred to as Queen of the night.
Epiphyllum Oxypetallum a jungle type cactus, the growth is similar to other orchid cactus and Cereus greggii a desert cactus that grows like a snaky vine. The latter I've seen growing over and around the inside of a greenhouse.
Hemnancy I have E. anguliger mine I grow outside under cover until the end of September or into October but move it into the greenhouse after the first frost hits. Mine sets flower buds while still outside and can bloom for me for several months in the greenhouse. Very fragrant, reminds me slightly of Hawthorn flowers. I also have Cyptocereus anthonyanus which is very similar to E. anquliger in form, the strap like stems/leaves zig zag, or look like ric rac, anquliger's are more rounded. The flowers are very similar to anquliger both in flower and fragrance. It also blooms at the same time as anquliger.

Thanks for the info, aftermidnight. I have my E. anguliger indoors under lights, is there any possibility it can set blooms there? I have had very bad experiences bringing plants back indoors with aphid infestations that spread to all my other houseplants so I am loathe to repeat. I had an Epi that I kept downstairs behind furniture (which keeps artificial light at night off of it) and next to a south-facing window that bloomed well there but I don't know if anguliger would respond to that. I could take it downstairs and put it by the window. I checked it today and it had grown up between my fluorescent light bulb and the fixture, I had to take the bulb out to free it.

Hemnancy, I think if you have a spot where other Epi's bloom for you E. anguliger should be no different. I find it very easy, more so than some of the others. Hmmm, I actually got the spelling right this time :o).
