Laying wire on the ground to serve as a deer version of a cattle guard has also been suggested. Where we haven't put up a fence yet I've thought about unrolling sections of shorter wire fenching onto the ground, until I realized weeds would come through the wire, the rider mower could get driven into it and so on (nevermind aesthetics).

Deer barriers belong up on and between fence posts around the plantings, about 10 ft. high. Time and money spent fiddling with less decisive actions is time and money that could be spent on a deer fence.
