Still going strong

It is amazing, no frost yet in my zone 5a, no frost in the forecast for the next 10 days, and most hostas still look great. Here are a few, might as well show them since not much is going on here presently. photos were taken yesterday late afternoon.

Atlantis :

Touch of Class, was the last one standing last year :

Stained Glass :

Fragrant Bouquet :

Empress Wu :

Liberty :

Frances Williams, always hides crown and petioles behind juniper and azalea to survive some afternoon sun :

Brother Stefan, another of my favorites :

Parhelion, when fully grown up will be a beauty :

El Nino :

Thanks for looking. Hopefully the extended growing season will result in beautiful and larger plants coming spring!

They look great for this late in the season in your zone. I just finished cutting everything back.

Some of them seem to actually like the cooler temperatures....or maybe it's the rain we are finally getting, but the colors have seemed to intensify in the late fall. Captain Kirk, Gypsy Rose, Paradigm, Funky Monkey, Janet, T-Rex, First Frost all seem brighter and with more contrast. I walked the garden this morning (I know, sans camera because I was picking up branches from last night's storm) and some of the hostas really stood out in the beds.

Yours look wonderful for this time of the year.

Several years ago I divided a huge Frances Williams that had to be moved due to a tree that fell, and now I have what looks like 2 distinct plants. One type looks similar to yours above, but with really white edges, and the other has very gold edges, and looks more like what I know as typical FW. Does FW sport off like that and what is the white edged one named?

    Some great pics,
Evey time I see Brother Stephan I think it seems so close to all the things I like about Great Expectations. I will need to get one for sure...

A few of my Hosta seem to be rejuvenated by the rains as well... It came to late for most of them...

Sandy, that FW looks like the others I have, except one which gets 3 hours of afternoon sun which later had light green leaves and is basically gone now. Most hostas in sun are gone now, most of the above were growing in shade.

Leafwatcher, I have two Great Expectations, and I will post that they are very different. They start about the same in spring, one gets more sun and is now a streaker. That streaker probably is a different cultivar, need some help to ID it. I got both from nurseries, have to dig up who produced the latter one.

I have a few that look better right now than they have all year.

So Sweet, thinks it's May or June.

Choo Choo Train, decided to grow late in the year.

Holy Mole has also kept on growing throughout Sept and Oct.

Stained Glass got brighter and brighter

There are lots more that are still looking good. Mostly, as Bernd says, those that are in the most shade are in better shape.

I am liking Stained glass more every time I see it.

You all up north must live in deep valleys! Down here,in the mountains, most of my hostas are nearly all gone, but then we already had some frost. Some of mine are completely gone. Phil

Phil, I remember to have had frost on September 15 around 1990 when working in Roanoke, Virginia, same day we had it here in NY state. Your elevation is probably related to getting frost. I am not living in a valley, but about 300 ft above Mohawk and Hudson rivers. This fall my area is very lucky in respect to frost, must be local 'global warming'.
It might be that the plants are also looking good in respect to yours because they did not get exposed to that long stretch of extreme heat as the South did, and I was able to supplement the water.
As Steve mentions above I also notice new growth of hosta leaves, so they seem to enjoy that long fall. That one crazy Great Expectations I have finished off its old foliage and grew streaked new leaves. But I also remember years ago one time we had quinces blooming end of November. Bernd

Up here in the north the valley's get frost long before the hills and hillsides do. When I lived at 1800' elevation we would often get a hard freeze or snow before getting a frost whereas the valley below, about 700' elevation, would have had a number of frosts.
I now live at 1000' and often see the frost "creeping" up the hill towards our house from the valley below.

Yeah,I'm at about 2200 ft. here, and there was frost in the valley below me and all over,a while back. During this recent cold snap, there was even snow flurries at the higher elevations,(above 3500 ft.),but those elevations are up at the Tennessee border, also Mt. Mitchell, elevation 6684 ft.,the highest point east of the Mississippi. Leaves are falling rapidly with all the wind,so this is probably it for this year. Phil

Brrr! Chilly this morning! We finally had a light frost last night, and suppposed to be frosty tomorrow night also, but not a hard frost (below 28 degrees) yet.

I walked the hosta gardens yesterday and was amazed to see Night Before Christmas looking springtime fresh, still. It was a new bare root plant this spring and took right off, doubling in size, in spite of being moved in the heat of July when we lost the shade from its original bed.

The deer never did get to Empress Wu this year and it still looks great. They ate all the albo marginatas all the way around it but couldn't get to her highness in the tomato cage I put over it.
