Yikes!
Thanks, Claire, for the head's up. I was thinking I'd done something right this year since I hadn't seen any beetles. Now I know that they're just arriving and coming soon to a garden near me!

Wow, I am so disappointed that their only recommendation was to use chemicals.

I usually hand pick 'em. I keep a tight lidded jar of water w. dish detergent handy to drop 'em into.

Any other organic approaches besides hand-picking? I've got some climbing roses that are prone to Japanese Beetle infestations, and even though I used Milky Spore on my lawn a couple of years ago, I think they're in for it again this year. I have a few organic pesticides in my arsenal, but I'm not sure they're effective agains JBs.

One interesting thing I just read is that if you are going to spray, it's better to do so before you see too many JBs or real damage to yoru plants. The beetles secrete something when they start feasting that draws more of their pals to the plant.

From U. Kentucky site: Neem extracts (Bon-Neem) deter Japanese beetle feeding but may not be adequate against high populations.

Have you checked out the Garden's Alive website? They do have a search function and I found what I was looking for there.

I was out the last few nights with a flashlight checking out the plants. Only one asiatic beetle on any plants so far but a lot more earwigs than I usually get. Right into a container of water with soap. Pretty easy. I am going to try those saucers of soy sauce too for the earwigs. :-)

I noticed the JB the last couple of days. especially yesterday and today. I am simply hoping they will not be too bad this year.

no poisons will be used around here.
