I like the look of yew, but it is slow growing and the deer do like it if that is a problem for you. However, it doesn't suck up water and require as much pruning as a cedar hedge (which deer also like). If you can, do try to determine where your property line is. We have surveyor pins marking all four corners of our lot. That knowledge can ward off potential future problems with how owns what and who is responsible for it.

Theoretically. After I noticed the people behind were reaching over the fence and cutting my shrubs pointing out the property marker seemed to have no effect. Next I may raise the fence to it is physically impossible for them to damage my plants.

How tall and wide do you want this planting to be?

I would say at least six feet high. Probably not wider than 4 feet? I will try and post a picture if I get a chance to take one LOL. I have Heather running down the side of my driveway so whatever we plant will be a backdrop for it.

I've added a shot that I took early on, but it doesn't show it well. The Juniper and Oregon Grape behind it is what we want to replace. The Heather is much more established.

Dwarf and slow-growing conifers would be naturals with rhododendrons and heather. You should also add more heather to form a substantial sweep, isolated poofs of heather don't register well visually as the leaf texture is so small. It takes a quantity of it to balance bigger leaves in the same scene. In this case the planting is dominated by the hybrid rhododendrons with their comparatively large leaves. Other plants used, including the heather will have to be coordinated and compatible with the rhododendrons.

Tall Oregon grape is a good blender and grows under a range of garden conditions. But many cultivated specimens here have foliage disease problems, and the spent fallen leaves are prickly.
