I have a burning bush in my back yard, it goes a bit yellow before it goes red, my mapes are starting to get their fall colour on too so it could be seasonal? I am not an expert though.

Premature fall color in this region often due to drought conditions. Too dry to hang onto the leaves, so they die and drop.

Solution is effective irrigation earlier in the season. Now, it's too late, once the plant starts to go dormant it keeps going until the weather changes.

It's pretty common for burning bush to turn yellow about this time of year. I noticed the vine maples and Indian plums are starting to turn already too, they are not as drought tolerant as some other native plants and so ones in particularly dry spots tend to turn colors early.

I have been watering regularly since the rains stopped in June.

But the other day (when I got down on the ground next to it to check the soil and how moist it is) I noticed that under a thin layer of mulch (not quite 1") was a vast amount of little roots all around it. It appears to have put roots above the soil level, but below the mulch level (which wasn't deep enough, clearly). So I'm thinking that despite my watering, it was still drying out and stressing the plant.

I've since spread about 1" of soil (from another part of the yard...native soil) over the roots and replaced the little amount of mulch that was left.

I'm fixin' to have a truckload of mulch brought in, since I haven't done that yet this year (too late, I'm sure) and I've notice my mulch level is getting low.

I am having the same problem. -same time of year only thing is this shrub has been in same place for about 5 years. Help! I do not want to lose it!
