Bright Pink Fragrant Rose Recommendations wanted

I am looking for a recommendation for a bright pink rose as a plant to commemorate my daughter's six year old friend who just died of cancer (on August 25). Her favourite colour was, of course, pink. We would also like for it to be very fragrant. She was a sweet, but feisty little girl.

It would be planted in a large deep brick planter that has a few bushes in it and a white lavender. There would be a lot of little hands looking and touching, so it should be a tough plant, just like Lisa was. A few thorns would be OK too. The soil does dry out occasionally, though with this special plant in it, perhaps more people would water it :-) We would be planting it in a ceremony to remember Lisa.

Size or shape isn't important, we could accommodate anything, though it shouldn't be too large.

I don't know where else to start. We're in Vancouver. I haven't planted roses since being on the West Coast,and I know they do differently than they did in Winnipeg where we had to worry more about frost.

Just a thought, as this is going to be a very special rose in memory of a very special little girl why not contact the Vancouver Rose Society. I'm sure they would be happy to help you select a rose that will be worthy of Lisa.

I grow such a limited amount of roses that I am no help but wanted to say I think this is a really nice idea (to plant a rose in someone's memory). I'm sorry that your daughter's friend died. How awful.

You might think about "Brothers Grimm" which I bought this year by accident. It is a bright, magenta pink with a small white fleck, vigorous but low growing (2 - 3 ft maybe) with quite a strong scent and seems to be disease resistant. I was pleasantly surprised.... what better memorial could you have of a lost child than a flower garden.... I hope you find what you are looking for. The above is just a suggestion.

'Sexy Rexy' is a possibility. It's a floribunda. You also might think about 'Betty Boop' although it's not pink. It is gorgeous with awesome foliage and is quite fragrant. I have one in my "memory garden" for much the same reason.

Sexy Rexy is a great rose but lacks in fragrance.How about double delight or perfume delight...or french perfume.double delight has two colors pink with a tint of whitish.French perfume is pink ( darker pink) You may want to google it out also...

Although not exactly what I'd consider a "bright" pink, you might want to consider 'Memorial Day' - not only does it seem very appropriately named for your purpose, but it is an AARS award winner and has a wonderful, longlasting fragrance. Color is described as "orchid pink". And if you are able to wait before planting - rose selection at this time of year is pretty limited anyway - 'April in Paris' is a new introduction from Jackson and Perkins and is the 2008 Rose of the Year. Again, not exactly a very bright pink, but a gorgeous marbled appearance (described in the catalogs as "porcelain blooms") and a very intense fragrance

'Belinda's Dream' is a very nice bright pink with a lot of fragrance. It gets a lot of wonderful reviews from people in the rose forums. It is a gorgeous rose. On my list to get next year. There is also the old stand-by 'Queen Elizabeth', mine is in it's Fall flush right now and looks beautiful. It is a very bright pink as well as a vigorous rose that is pretty easy to care for. Nice fragrance too. 'Queen Elizabeth' will be available to buy easily bare-root in Jan, 'Belinda's Dream' will be a little harder to find. You may have to mail order that one, but it is worth it! (Try Sequoia Nursery in CA, they have it.)

Queen Elizabeth came to my mind also, altho size might be an issue. I beleive it IS a grandiflora and I let my grow tall. 8'-10' is not uncommon in a mature specimen.

Sheer Bliss is exquisite in color & form. Wonderful fragrance. Mine is inclined to the tall side.

The Fairy rose puts on a good show and has a feminine quality to it...but little fragrance and fierce thorns.

Angel Face is a nice floribunda with great fragrance, but certainly not pink. Hey...lavender is nice...and a sweet name, under the circumstances.

Contacting the local rose society was a good idea, too.
